Moving to a new city is a big change, and once your car is parked at your new home, there is an important question you might forget to ask. Does your current car insurance policy still cover you in this new location?
Your insurance coverage stays active when you move. However, your policy details might become outdated, and a deadline for updating your records begins the day you arrive.
Car insurance rules change more than you might expect when crossing state lines. In this blog, let’s understand what changes, what stays the same, and the important deadline you should know about.
Does Car Insurance Stop at the State Border?
Your insurance coverage doesn’t stop just because you moved. Your policy is valid across India, so if you have an accident in your new city, it will be handled the same way it would have been at home.
Driving outside of India is different. You will need to add written permission to your insurance policy before you drive your car into another country.
Liability insurance costs are also the same everywhere in India. The government has set a standard price of ₹2,094 per year for small petrol or diesel cars (up to 1000cc), no matter if you live in a big city or a small town.
Essentially, your insurance coverage stays the same, but you need to update your records to avoid problems later.
What Changes the Moment Your Address Does
The first thing that changes is own-damage pricing, as it runs on zones, and in India, only two of them exist.
- Zone A has eight cities: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.
- Zone B is the rest of the country.
If you shift from a small town into one of those eight big ones mentioned in Zone A, the risk your insurer priced will have to change. This is because most of the Zone A cities have denser traffic, higher theft, and more expensive repair costs.
Your address on the policy is a declaration. If you hold on to an old policy because it keeps the premium down, this simply counts as non-disclosure, and non-disclosure is the cleanest ground on which an insurer can refuse the claim.
So it is important to spend at least 10 minutes to check car insurance online against your new PIN code to tell you what the honest number is.
Your zone-wise new insurance price usually starts at your next renewal, not right away. Telling your insurer about your move now won’t change your costs today.
Deadline to Update Your Car Registration
Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act is what sets this deadline. Vehicles kept in another state for more than twelve months must be given a new registration mark by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) where they now live.
The process happens in specific steps.
- The first thing is to get a No Objection Certificate from your previous RTO. This usually stays valid for about six months.
- The next is to apply for registration in your new state, pay for the local road tax, and get your new registration number.
The most commonly forgotten step is updating your insurance policy with your new license plate number. If your policy shows an old number that no longer exists, it will cause problems if you ever need to file a claim.
For the road tax already paid in your old state, this can be reclaimed once the vehicle leaves the state. The refund normally tends to arrive long after the new tax has been paid.
Why Cashless Repairs Do Not Travel as Easily
While your insurance covers you everywhere, the list of garages that offer cashless repairs is specific to each city.
Insurers build tie-ups city by city, so a company with twenty approved workshops where you used to live might have three where you have moved to, or even none of them near your location.
If you go to a garage outside this network, you will need to pay for repairs yourself and file a claim for reimbursement. While you eventually get your money back, this process takes much longer.
That’s why it is best to check the workshop coverage in the new city through a car insurance renewal to see if the coverage is worth more than the small amount you might save on your premium.
The distance also matters here, as an approved garage in your old city won’t help if your car can’t be driven that far, and standard insurance policies do not cover the cost of towing your car between states.
What Stays the Same When You Move
- Changing your address does nothing to your no-claims bonus. The bonus belongs to the person rather than the place, so five years of clean travel won’t go to waste just because your postcode changed.
- Just keeping the old address on file will not preserve a Zone B price either, as insurers usually ask for proof of residence at the claim-making stage.
- If you file a claim while you are still in the process of changing your registration, the insurance company will ask more questions. They won’t automatically deny your claim, but it may take longer to process while they verify your records.
